Pancreas disease- a SAVy response

The discovery in 1995 that salmon pancreas disease is caused by salmon alphavirus (SAV) and not, as many believed, a nutritional deficiency, represented a major breakthrough in understanding an economically crippling condition affecting the, then fledgling, salmon farming industry. Credit for this discovery belongs to Marian McLoughlin and her colleagues at the Veterinary Sciences Division in Stormont, Belfast, coupled with support from both the Irish and Scottish salmon farming industries at the time.
