Red rot caused by Colletotrichum falcatum Went is the most destructive disease of sugarcane and occurs in most sugarcane growing countries of the world. Effective control of red rot has been mainly through the use of resistant varieties. Although, several fungicides have been found effective in vitro against C. falcatum, they have failed to provide effective control of this disease due to the impervious nature of the cane rind which inhibits uptake of fungicides. In the absence of suitable fungicides and frequent breakdown of resistance, mycoflora associated with the sugarcane plant has been evaluated in vitro against C. falcatum.
