The World Steel Association reported that global crude steel output totalled about 1.03Bt in the first seven months of the year, down 5.3% compared to the same period in 2019. However, higher output in July narrowed the decline from 6%. For July, the world’s crude steel output dipped 2.5% on-year to 152.7Mt, but it recovered from the 148.7Mt produced in June. This has had an understandable impact on global demand for metallurgical coal for 2020 to date, particularly from the mature steel producing regions of Europe and North Asia, which are the most important export markets for the US and Australia, respectively.
