Reinventing the tire for'proactive'safety

Bridgestone Corp.is working on the development of tires for a"connected & autonomous"future,as new-mobility trends gain traction around the world.A particular focus is on'proactive safety'-a digital-tire concept that allows autonomous vehicles to better estimate the tire/vehicle system performance for a given driving environment and predict danger before the risk is apparent.These insights are then used by the virtual driver to automatically optimise driving to reduce the likelihood of an accident.Bridgestone's development programme encompasses many areas,including materials-design,sensor and digital-twin technologies,explained Hans Dorfi,director of digital engineering,Bridgestone Americas,during the Tire Tech 2020 conference in Hanover,Germany.While new designs and materials will focus on continuous mobility,sustain-ability and cost-per-mile,advanced pressure,load and wear sensors will help maintain tires performance.
