Opposing Mandatory Front of Package Food Labelling in the Council Preliminary Discussions

A European Citizens Initiative entitled "Pro-Nu-triscore"1 called on the European Commission to introduce mandatory nutritional labelling on the front packaging of foodstuffs to improve consumers' awareness about the healthiness of different food options. This European Citizens Initiative was registered in May 2019 and withdrawn in April 2020. Data available in the public domain do not show the numbers of EU citizens supporting the project broken down by country, which is the usual case for successful European Citizens Initiatives. It would be interesting to see how strong the support for this initiative was in the Czech Republic since its launching was underreported by the Czech media. Reference to this Citizens Initiative did not appear in the general mass media, but was limited to resources specializing in food law issues, such as a newsletter edited by the Czech Republic's Federation of the Food and Drink Industries.
