Reports: Czech Republic -Prohibition of Cages for Laying Hens - New Legal Regulation of Egg Production in the Czech Republic

The standards of protection of laying hens are defined in the Council Directive 1999/74/EC1, which is applicable in all EU Member States. However, this Directive is based on minimum harmonisation principle, so it only sets the minimum standards whichare necessary to apply in all EU Member States, but some states may set higher requirements. The Directive permitted to breed the hens in unenriched cages systems constructed before January 1, 2003, only till January 1, 2012. Since that, enriched cages were the only permitted way of breeding hens in cages according to the referred Directive.
