End-of-life care, palliative care consultation, and palliative care referral in the emergency department: a systematic review

As access to palliative care across disease types and associated service provision extends and adapts, it is acknowledged that access to palliative care may now be considered in a range of care settings. Taking into consideration how services are delivered across a range of care settings and the drive for people to access care in their own homes, it has been identified that people living with life-limiting conditions may access emergency care more frequently as their condition changes or during an acute episode in their disease trajectory. There is a significant volume of work looking at the importance of care planning and collaboration between services across care settings. However, this does not completely preclude the need to access emergency care.
