Emphysematous cystitis in chronic kidney disease

Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a rare entity of urinary tract infection caused by gas-forming organisms, commonly Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae.1,2 While diabetes and chronic urinary tract infections are common predisposing factors, EC is also associated with neuropathic bladder, bladder outlet obstruction, in-dwelling urinary catheters and immuno-suppression. Despite the presence of risk factors, EC remains rare in the end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) population, with the majority of published cases in the Asian population. We report two cases of EC in Australian dialysis patients in a tertiary referral nephrology unit.
