In managing pastures for better yield and quality, beef farmers have three important factors to consider, according to well-respected forage specialist Bill Thomas.Yield, quality, and forage stand persistence are the three pillars of forage production, Thomas told Maritime Beef Council's Virtual Conference Series attendees. Yield and persistence offer the pasture manager cost-efficient forage production, while quality provides efficient energy for grazing animals.Thomas said yield is the number one factor that has the largest impact on forage profitability. "If you get an extra tonne of dry matter per acre; you get an extra $158 per metric tonne of dry matter."
