摘要

Contemporary meaning of the word 'bane' is the "cause of continuous trouble" and black Sigatoka disease is certainly that for bananas and banana growers. 'Bane' is a word of Ancient English origins and with a now obsolete meaning of 'deadly poison' and why some acutely poisonous wild plants, such as henbane (Hyoscyamus niger in the plant family Solanaceae) and wolfsbane (Aconitum napellus in the plant family Ranunculaceae), carry the word 'bane' as part of their common name. It is no exaggeration tosay that black Sigatoka (black leaf streak) has a 'poisonous' effect on the yield and production of commercial bananas.
