Raizen exports cane-derived pellets to UK

Raizen Energia, a Brazilian joint venture between Shell and local conglomerate Cosan, exported a shipment of sugar cane-derived pellets to the UK, opening up a second European market for the biofuel. Raizen did not specify the volume or the buyer of the shipment, which was exported from Paranagua port in Parana state. Last year, Raizen supplied 50,000 metric tons (t) of the product to German power generator RWE. The UK was Brazil's largest export market for wood pellets in 2020, importing 188,778t of product last year, up by 337pc from 63,678t in 2019. Raizen produced the pellets its plant in Jau, Sao Paulo state. The 100,000 t/yr plant is part of the company's strategy to monetize surplus bagasse leftover from the cane-crushing process.
