Japanese paper manufacturer Nippon Paper Industries has begun test operations at a 149MW coal-fired power generation plant at Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture, targeting a commercial start-up in March next year. The Ishinomaki-Hibarino coal-fired power station can cofire up to 30pc of biomass fuel. The plant plans to initially run on domestic unused lumber supplies. Nippon Paper also plans to use imported wood pellets mainly from North America, as well as Asia-Pacific, to further boost its biomass utilisation rate.
