UK proposes biomass CHP subsidy changes

The UK's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (Beis) has proposed increasing the efficiency requirements for biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plants eligible to receive subsidies under the UK contracts for difference (CFD) scheme. Beis today launched a public consultation on proposed changes to the efficiency requirements biomass CHPs must meet to qualify for high levels of CFD support. The government is concerned that the current criteria mean it is possible for biomass CHPs to qualify for high levels of CFD support while producing low levels of useful heat, resulting in low overall efficiency and a failure to make best use of biomass resources, Beis said.
