Urban arterial road landscape evaluation concerning dynamic variation of road service quality impact factors

In view of the facts that the previous landscape evaluation studies did not make a clear distinction between urban arterial roads and collector roads, which merely focused on the "universal" evaluation criteria such as road greening and social factors, this study takes South Furong Road and South Shaoshan Road in Changsha as the research object concerning the dynamic variation of urban arterial roads' service quality impacts. Based on the traditional evaluation model, the "unique" influencing factors such as the road engineering quality and transporting efficiency have been introduced. Thus, an assessment method based on AHP-landscape (analytic hierarchy process for landscape evaluation) comprehensive evaluation index has been proposed. The results show the index of comprehensive landscape evaluation for South Furong Road, B1+B2=7.306, M1+M2=81.18%, belonging to level IV, namely a nice and decent landscape, while the index of South Shaoshan South Road, B1+B2=6.715, M1+M2=74.61%, belonging to level III. It concludes that the road landscape quality of South Furong Road is significantly better than that of South Shaoshan Road. Compared with traditional methods, the current results are more comprehensive and reasonable, which makes up the inadequacy of neglecting frequent fluctuation on the urban arterial roads' service quality with urban development, roads operation, and maintenance. This method can provide theoretical support for the optimization of urban arterial road landscape schemes and promotion of the landscape maintenance assisted by investment and policy, which can ultimately realize the virtuous circle and coordination of aesthetics, economic cost, and functional utility under long-term operating conditions.
