A comparison of different adhesive bonding concepts

Lightweight automotive construction is constantly exploring innovative ways of saving weight. This includes using constantly growing numbers of exterior parts made of a wide range of plastics. Examples include doors, spoilers and bumpers and, in particular, engine hoods and tailgates /1,2,3/. These latter components in particular account for a significant proportion of the vehicle's weight and make an anything but negligible contribution to the vehicle's strength and rigidity. Weight savings amounting to around 25-30% - and therefore similar savings for CO2 emissions - can be achieved by substituting plastics for metals.
