The scenario of Indian agriculture is unique in the world. India is a developing country, the world's largest democracy, where economic growth has been somewhat slow but stable. With a population of 1.2 billion people, 62% are dependent on agricultureand live in the rural areas. The farmers are on the farms not by choice butdue to lack of employment in the secondary (industrial) and the tertiary (service) sectors. The agriculture sector represents 62% of the population, but the contribution to the GDP (gross domestic production) is below 20%. There are a number of reasons that make the agriculture scene in India extremelycomplex.
