A look at the visual modeling of plants using L-systems.

A review is given of at the history of modelling plant architecture using L-systems (Lindenmeyer systems), and a guide to current research, mainly by computer scientists. The topics include: distinctive features of the original L-system formalism; its subsequent extensions; visualization of L-system models; modelling of interactions between plants and their environment; the use of L-systems as a plant modelling language; and a survey of applications.
