The 'Fist of the Fleet' squadron gave Shawn Jakway the opportunity for the ultimate Super Hornet photoshoot, shared here, while our fighter-pilot contributor, Wingco, recalls his own F/A-18 experiences, such as a dogfight between the Hornet and his Tornado GR1. 'THE FIST OF the Fleet,’ officially known as Strike Fighter Squadron 25, can trace its proud history back to 1943 and the heart of World War Two. The squadron was originally established as Torpedo Squadron 17 (VT-17), and its first deployment was to attack targets in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, flying the Grumman TBF Avenger. Two years later, on April 7, 1945, VT-17 scored several torpedo hits on the famed Japanese battleship Yamato and sank one of its destroyer escorts as part of Task Force 58, during Operation Ten-Go.
