US questions science identifying UV stabiliser as POP

The US EPA disagrees with a UN expert committee's finding that a UV stabiliser widely used in plastics meets the criteria to be listed as a persistent organic pollutant (POP) under the Stockholm Convention, according to an agency official. Speaking at the American Chemistry Council (ACC)'s GlobalChem conference on 31 March, Karissa Kovner, senior policy advisor for international affairs at the EPA, said that the US questions the science behind the decision of the Convention's POPs review committee to rule in January that UV-328 meets the criteria for bioaccumulation and long-range transport.
