California Assembly passes bill to prohibit PFASs in children's products

The California Assembly has passed legislation to ban per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in children's products, putting the state on track to become one of the first in the US to eliminate the persistent substance class in these items. The bill (AB 652), which cleared the chamber 54-0 on 20 May, would restrict the sale of new juvenile products containing intentionally added PFASs at levels of 100 parts per million (ppm) or more of total organic fluorine. A regrettable substitution clause would mandate that producers choose "the least toxic alternative" to these compounds.
