When the primary legislation implementing the new Australian Industrial Chemical Introduction Scheme (AICIS) was passed in 2019, much of the detail of the new scheme, which came into effect on 1 July 2020, had yet to be determined. The Industrial Chemicals (General) Rules 2019 and the AICIS Industrial Chemicals Categorisation Guidelines (which are to be read with the Rules) now set out the details for the regulation of the importation and manufacture of industrial chemicals in Australia under the AICIS, including the categorisation of their introductions.
