European Commission adopts authorisation decision for use of trichloroethylene

The European Commission has adopted a decision granting a company permission for a specific use of the SVHC trichloroethylene under the REACH authorisation system. The latest approval comes as the EU executive gears up to review the future of the authorisation process under the chemicals strategy for sustainability. Trichloroethylene, which is listed on Annex XIV because it has carcinogenic properties, had a sunset date of 21 April 2016. On 4 March this year, the Commission granted the company Spolana authorisation to use the substance as an extraction solvent in caprolactam production. Caprolactam is used in the production of nylon 6 fibres and resins for textile, engineering and automotive purposes.
