Plastics have excellent properties making them both high in functionality and low in cost. They are strong, flexible, thermostable, moisture resistant and light, and can be produced in numerous colours and shapes. However, conventional plastics are also fossil-based and are neither produced from renewable sources, nor biodegradable. Their recycling is limited. They have a negative influence on our carbon footprint, they fail to contribute to a circular economy and their impact on the environment is the subject of mounting concern across the globe.
