Ethnopharmacological relevance: Ilex cornuta Lindl. et Paxt. (Aquifoliaceae family) belongs to the Ilex genus. The leaves of this plant are used for the popular herbal tea "Ku-Ding-Cha" in China due to their health benefits for sore throat, obesity and hypertension. Our previous studies have shown that the extract of Ilex cornuta root exerts cardioprotective effects in rat models of myocardial ischaemic injury, and several new kinds of triterpenoid saponins from Ilex cornuta (TSIC) have protective effects against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced cardiomyocyte injury.
