Isotropic to smectic-A phase transition in taper-shaped liquid crystal is described using Landau theory. Experimental results observed the electro-optical switching as well as a polarization peak similar to ferroelectric in the smectic phase in taper-shaped liquid crystal. This behavior is explained using phenom-enological theory. The switched polarization as function of temperature, electric and frequency is described for the isotropic and smectic-A phases of the transition. The temperature dependence of the switching time is also explained. We find the qualitative agreement between theoretical and experimental results. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
