Stelco starts merchant pig iron production at Lake Erie Works

Canada’s integrated flat steel producer Stelco has commenced the production of merchant pig iron in Ontario as the new equipment has been successfully commissioned. Stelco announced the start of the operations of a new pig iron caster with a capacity of 1 million stpy at its Lake Erie Works asset in Nanticoke, Ontario. The project supports the tactical flexibility strategy of the company and is expected to enable the full capitalisation on increased capacity after the upgrade of BF at the same asset, according to the official statement.
