Corporate R&D spending rose more than sales in 2012

For a group of 2,000 top international corporationsanalyzed in an EU study, the total R&D spendingincreased 6.2% in 2012, compared with a 4.2%increase in net sales. The European Commission’sJoint Research Centre and Institute for ProspectiveTechnological Studies analyses R&D data and releasesa report each year. The 2013 “EU Industrial R&DInvestment Scoreboard” analyzed data from the world’stop 2,000 companies as ranked in terms of R&Dspending. This group had 2012 net sales of US$23billion and total R&D investments of US$0.7 billion, foran R&D-spending-to-sales ratio of 3.2%. This ratio isreferred to as “R&D Intensity” in the EU “Scoreboard.”
