AN OVERVIEW OF THE CURRENT USJOHNE'S DISEASE PROGRAM

Efforts to control Johne's disease in the USA have undergone change in recent years as a result of reduced funding at the federal level. Although a national mandatory control program does not exist in the USA, the Voluntary Bovine Johne's Disease Control Program (VBJDCP) [1] provides standards that have been used by many states, resulting in consistent programs across states. Federal funding has supported research and educational efforts, and earlier in this century provided cost-share for individualanimal and herd testing in farm risk assessments and management control plans. These efforts greatly increased producer awareness of the disease and helped identify effective herd management practices to control the disease, which are widely used today. Although federal funding for the VJDCP is no longer available, many states retain active programs for control of Johne's disease.
