Demystifying research: it's for everyone

One of my ambitions has always been to be part of a team and organisation that undertakes research that contributes to the body of knowledge to improve patient care. My trust has been fortunate enough to have a Florence Nightingale Professor in Nursing and Midwifery, Debbie Carrick-Sen. One of her key objectives has been to make sense of research for our frontline staff, and create the capability and capacity of our teams to contribute to the research agenda. NHS England's (2016) national nursing and midwifery strategy, Leading Change, Adding Value, made a specific commitment to lead and drive research to provide evidence of the impact of what nurses and midwives do. Commitment seven of the strategy recognised the wealth of evidence-based practice to help us improve our care. However, it highlighted that there remains a need for robust evaluation, embedded from the outset, so that nursing can demonstrate its positive impact.
