Total hip arthroplasty (THA) for hip fracture continues to be controversial. Do the improved patient-reported outcome measures, which are known to be relatively small, justify the increased risks, particularly of dislocation? Some surgeons favour the compromise of a bipolar hemiarthroplasty, with the assumption that there will be fewer dislocations when compared with THA in the hip fracture population.
