Secure and Reliable Wireless Medical Device and Mobile Connectivity

The wireless mobile healthcare device market is the most complex of any vertical market because of the application requirements and existing healthcare ecosystem. At the most basic level is the need for laptops and tablets to access electronic health records and for voice communication devices to provide timely alerts to nurse call and other notification systems. These new notification devices are now integrated into nurse call systems and unique enterprise applications to assist with alarm management. The standard of care has evolved to include the management of different levels of application requirements for various devices, including smart infusion pumps, wireless barcode administration applications, and the shift to wireless local area network (WLAN) patient monitoring. Currently, the healthcare enterprise is faced with the unique challenges of increasing productivity while providing a secure connection for mobile devices. These challenges are multifaceted and include unique cybersecurity requirements, as well as the need for the correct design and deployment of mobile medical devices (e.g., the entire mobile ecosystem in the hospital environment). This ecosystem includes data on laptops, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, BYOD (bring your own device) devices, and the myriad of wireless medical devices.
