CP Rail sees 63% drop in Q2 2016 crude shipments

Calgary -Crude volumes handled by Canadian Pacific Rail in the second quarter were down 63% to 7,000 carloads, compared with 19,000 carloads in the same period of 2015, the railroad said Wednesday. Each carload can transport 560-600 barrels depending on the grade of crude. “Q2 has been quite challenging, and we have had the fires,” CP’s CEO Hunter Harrison said on an earnings webcast, referring to the early May devastating wildfire at the Fort McMurray area, in Alberta, that resulted in roughly 1.06 million b/d of raw bitumen output being cut for over a month.
