Stream of inland barges out of crude service finally slows

Houston-The transfer of inland crude barges to other kinds of service in the US trickled to a halt during the first quarter, indicating that the market may have found some footing, Kirby executives said last week. The number of inland crude barges industrywide in the first quarter held stable at 175 from Q4 2015, Kirby CEO David Grzebinski said during his company’s Q1 earnings call. That comes after more than a year of declines, with inland barges in crude service sliding to 175 in Q4 2015 from about 550 in mid-2014, Grzebinski said during Kirby’s Q4 earnings call.
