Russia faces tough battle for LNG markets

Russia needs to show flexibility in adapting to LNG buyers' demands, including for greater spot sales, to beat off growing competition from a list of global rivals keen to supply the tightening Asia-Pacific gas markets, market players heard last week. While Russia is already filtering its plans for future LNG projects in favor of only those nearest to consumer markets, such as those on Sakhalin Island, it needs to better adapt to new conditions by offering shorter-term contracts and abandoning oil-indexation in the price formula, delegates heard at the Sakhalin Oil and Gas 2016 forum.
