Russia’s Gazprom said Monday it had delayed switching to a so-called prepayment supply of natural gas to Ukraine by a week to June 9 after Ukraine made a first tranche of $786 million as partial repayment of its outstanding multi-billion gas debt. The gas giant said it was also ready to consider additional options while negotiating a new gas price for Kiev. “The actual introduction of the prepayment delivery will depend on further payments to repay in full [Ukraine’s] total debt of $2.237 billion for gas delivered by April 1 and the progress in payments for gas deliveries in April and May,” Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said. Miller said that the payment for May is to be made by next Monday, June 9. Russia previously threatened to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine on June 3 unless Kiev made a payment by June 2, raising the stakes in a conflict that potentially threatens the stability of supplies through Ukraine to the EU.
