China a clear winner in Russian gas deal

Singapore—Despite protracted negotiations over price, China has emerged a clear winner in the gas deal agreed with Russia this week. The agreement, valued at $400 billion over 30 years, includes an oil-linked price formula, although few other commercial terms have been revealed. Nomura Research analysts led by Gordon Kwan said Thursday in a note that they believe China “has driven a hard bargain” with Russia, securing an estimated gas price of $9.80/MMBtu.
