Seoul rules out LNG crunch amid nuclear outages

Seoul—South Korea’s energy ministry Wednesday refuted fears of a looming LNG shortage and winter power outages amid a series of nuclear plant shutdowns. “The country holds enough LNG stockpiles to make up for any electricity loss from troubled nuclear reactors. The government is well prepared for any situation,” said Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy gas department official Yoon Je-Min. “We see no need for now to buy additional LNG on the spot market to meet extra demand from gas-fired plants,” she said. “The government is keeping a close watch for any changes in natural gas demand for electricity generation in winter, when the country’s electricity demand usually hits record highs.”
