Japan should look at piping in Russian gas

Daegu, South Korea—Japan should consider importing gas via pipeline from Sakhalin in Russia’s Far East in a move to reduce its current sole reliance on LNG imports, Shigeru Muraki, executive vice president of Tokyo Gas, told Platts Monday. A 2,500 km (1,550 mile) pipeline with a capacity to transport 6 million mt/year of gas from Sakhalin to Kashima on Japan’s east coast could be built for $7 billion, Muraki said in an interview on the sidelines of the World Energy Congress in Daegu, South Korea.
