Singapore—China’s apparent oil demand in May rose 8.2% year on year to 43.80 million mt, or an average 10.36 million b/d, according to Platts estimates Friday based on recently released government data. On a b/d basis, apparent oil demand in May declined 1.2% from April. China does not release official data on oil demand, or commercial and strategic oil inventories. Platts calculates apparent oil demand based on data about refiners’ crude throughput and net oil product imports, as reported by the government.
