Gazprom suspends gas purchases from independents

Moscow—In a surprise move September 10, Russian gas giant Gazprom said it was suspending natural gas purchases from independent producers for an indefinite period because of a fall in domestic gas consumption. Gazprom buys the majority of production from independent producers for onward sale to domestic customers and for export, but as its own production volumes fall it has opted to limit purchases from third-party producers.
