Poland study shows no impact from shale gas drilling

Warsaw—Following the first major study of itskind, the Polish Geological Institute (PGI) March2 said shale gas exploration in the country isnot harmful to the environment if carried out inaccordance with legal procedures, but it alsoconcluded Poland’s shale gas reserves arelikely to be much lower than originally thought.Poland is thought to have the biggestshale gas reserves in Europe, and explorationusing the controversial hydraulic fracturingtechnique, known as fracking, has alreadybeen carried out at a number of Polish sites.
