US Drillers Lay Down Just 11 Oil Rigs in Latest Week

The number of rigs drilling for oil in the US fell by 11 this past week in a further sign that the five-month freefall in US oil drilling may be starting to slow down. Data from oil-field services provider Baker Hughes showed 668 rigs drilling for oil in the US and 221 drilling for natural gas in the week ended May 8. The 11 oil rigs laid down during the latest week matches the previous lowest weekly decline this year. However, that low point--part of a sudden two-week deceleration in late March and early April--was followed by a spike back to a loss of 42 oil rigs in the week ended Apr. 10 (OD Apr.13'15).
