Freeport-McMoRan Turns Heads at US Gulf Sale

An affiliate of mining giant Freeport-McMoRan got tongues wagging as it heavily outgunned the usual suspects such as Chevron, Shell and BP at Wednesday's federal sale of oil and gas exploration leases in the central portion of the US Gulf of Mexico. Freeport-McMoRan Oil & Gas was the top spender at Lease Sale 231 in New Orleans with a total of 16 high bids worth a combined $321.4 million. That was way more than runner-up Chevron which placed the high bids on six blocks for a total outlay of $103.3 million.
