Gas Flows to Hong Kong Disrupted by Landslide

The flow of natural gas to Hong Kong was halted on Sunday after a massive landslide ruptured part of a major pipeline in Shenzhen, in China's southeastern Guangdong province. The landslide, which left some 90 people unaccounted for on Monday, buried parts of Shenzhen in 10 meters of mud. It damaged the 61 kilometer branch line of the second West-East Gas Pipeline, which links Guangdong's capital city Guangzhou to Shenzhen. This is the latest in a string of accidents involving the energy industry. In August, a warehouse containing hazardous chemicals exploded in Tianjin, a northern port city next to Beijing, killing 173 people (IOD Aug.14'15).
