The political battle over Canadian oil sands exports to US and Asian markets has come down to an increasingly vigorous media campaign between the environmental community and the energy industry. Canadian producers, which want to triple output of the massive unconventional resource to more than 5 million barrels per day in the next 25 years, are busy spending millions to promote the trade and energy security linkages with the US, while trying to burnish their environmental credentials. Around US$200 billion could be invested in northern Alberta over the next two decades, according to Imperial Oil, an Exxon Mobil affiliate and one of the largest leaseholders.
