Alabama Power to shut Gorgas coal plant in April

Alabama Power, a utility operated by the Southern Company, will shut its 1,221MW Gorgas coal-fired power plant in Parrish, Alabama, in April because meeting federal environmental mandates at the units would be too costly, the company announced yesterday. The three coal-fired generating units at the plant are expected to permanently shut on 15 April. The company estimated it would cost approximately $300mn to comply with government regulations related to handling coal ash and wastewater.
