Lawsuit threatens to shut Cerrejon coal mine

Colombia’s Cerrejon coal complex is at risk of closure, as the country’s highest administrative court considers a lawsuit that seeks to cancel the company’s environmental mining plan. The lawsuit — filed to the state council by communities, human rights organizations, three leftist lawmakers and non- governmental organizations — argues that there has been a lack of control and monitoring by environmental authorities, and that the negative impact on La Guajira’s water resources has generated a food crisis and violated the rights of the local population.
