US pension fund may divest from coal

The third largest US pension fund is taking steps toward potentially dropping investments in a number of coal mining companies. The New York comptroller said yesterday that the New York Common Retirement Fund is reviewing 27 coal mining companies to determine whether they are taking the necessary steps to convert their business models to align "with the growing low-carbon economy." Those companies represent about $98mn of the fund's $210.5bn portfolio, the fund said.
