CDA: Calcium-Dependent Peptide Antibiotics from Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) Containing Unusual Residues

In 1983 Hopwood et al. isolated a substance from Strepto-myces coelicolor A3(2) that inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria in the presence of Ca2 + ions. Because of this activity it was named CDA (calcium-dependent antibiotic). In planar lipidbilayers, CDA forms channels that in the presence of calcium ions selectively transport singly charged cations.
