Transition-metal complexes are crucial in the selective activation of C-H bonds and the functionalization of saturated hydrocarbons,in particular,of methane.Although economically competitive and attractive large-scale processes have yet to be developed,rather detailed insight has been obtained into the particular role of the electronic structures of transition-metal complexes in the elementary steps involved in these reactions.
